What is Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH)

FAQ

CBH is an evidence-based goal orientated therapy. The therapy integrates a mixture of Hypnosis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness techniques to overcome a wide range of emotional and physical issues. Peer reviewed research into CBH has shown that the therapy is effective in treating many issues with examples of anxiety, mild depression, phobias, irritable bowl syndrome, insomnia and bad habits. Studies in Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy suggest that each therapy is more effective combined together than when used separately. During the therapy sessions, clients are being taught practical techniques to improve how they feel, think and behave with the aim that the client eventually becomes their own therapist.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a relaxed state on mind in which you achieve heightened focus and concentration. When under hypnosis you will feel incredibly calm and relaxed. When the mind is relaxed, you become more receptive to suggestions. Hypnosis works by allowing us to change our subconscious by stopping our negative thoughts and replacing them with new positive suggestions. Although hypnosis might look like sleep, you will be fully aware of what’s going on and will stay in control of your behaviours and actions. At no point, will you be made to do things against your will.

What is CBT?

CBT is a talking therapy that helps people change their negative attitude and behaviours for the better by focusing on the thoughts, feelings and beliefs held by a person and how these thoughts and feelings affect the behaviour of the individual. The therapist and client work together to identify the negative and very often inaccurate beliefs that might have held back the person. By identifying the negative patterns, the client is taught how to respond to them in a more effective and positive way.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a practise which is about observation with no judgement or criticisms. The practise is about training to concentrate and paying attention on the present moment. The practise involves awareness and paying attention to thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and the surrounding environment. Mindfulness techniques are effective in managing unwanted or intrusive thoughts and reducing anxiety.

What happens in a session?

In the first session, we will discuss the challenges you would like to overcome. We will talk in detail about it, how it’s affecting you and agree some clear objectives. I will then explain to you the techniques and how the therapy will work. I will ensure that you clearly understand what hypnotherapy entails. We will in partnership agree a treatment plan which is individually designed with your needs in mind. Following sessions will usually start with review of your homework, reconfirming your goal, continued treatment and progress.
